Participant Support Leader – European Jamboree 2020

Role Description:

Girlguiding North East England is currently recruiting a leader to support a young participant with diabetes attending the European Jamboree in summer 2020. The role is voluntary, but all reasonable expenses will be reimbursed, including the European Jamboree trip. It is worth noting that this leader is a support role and as such won’t be able to partake in activities on site and will have ‘free time’ during the day. You must be available for the whole of the Jamboree and the briefing weekends as detailed below. Please note suitable applicants from outside North East England will be considered providing they are willing to attend all briefings with the unit:

Dates:

  • Leader briefing 8-9th February. Hesley Wood Scout Activity Centre, White Lane, Sheffield, S35 2YH.
  • Second briefing 20-22nd March. Bramhope Scout Campsite and Activity Centre, Occupation Lane, Bramhope, Leeds, LS16 9HR.
  • Big Camp 22 – 25th May. Yorkshire Event centre, Great Yorkshire Showground, Harrogate, HG2 8NZ.
  • Jamboree itself 27th July – 6th August in Gdansk, more information at briefing weekends.

Application Process:

In order to apply for the role, you must write an application letter to the International Advisor for the NEE Region outlining your motivation and your ability to take on the position, in relation to the person specification. The letter must be no longer than one A4 page, font size 11 and all letters must be addressed to Frances Cunningham, sent to international@girlguidingnortheast.org.uk.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview in person or via skype. Please submit all applications by 27th January.

Person Specification:

Any person applying for the role must be able to demonstrate the following criteria:

Essential:

  • Active member of Girlguiding
  • Aged 18+
  • Be physically fit
  • Be able to cope in intense environments, including working on little sleep
  • Be friendly and supportive
  • First aid trained and confident in delivering it
  • Willing to support the unit leadership team
  • Time will be needed in advance of the trip to be trained in use of diabetic equipment – this will be involve approx. 2 trips to Sheffield

Desirable:

  • Experience in providing individual support
  • Advanced medical knowledge in particular diabetes

In this role you will be required to provide medical cover:

  • Assisting the participant with diabetic lows and hypos during the night.
  • Assisting the leader of the participant’s unit with writing the participant’s care plan.
  • Assisting with administering general first aid to the whole unit.
