Looking for the next step on your 4 journey or to find out more? Yes?

Girlguiding North East England is running a Topic training. Come and join the fun! To attend the training you should be aged 14 – 26 and already have attended a Basic Training.

This training is designed for current peer educators and is aimed at introducing you to the new topic Breaking Free.

What is Breaking Free about?

We’re helping girls challenge stereotypes.  Gender stereotyping happens every day. It’s in the way clothes are designed, the toys we give children and the jobs we’re encouraged to do. We know that these gender stereotypes make it harder for young people to achieve their dreams.

Girls tell us that they’re surrounded by stereotypes. And that seeing simplified versions of what it means to be a girl makes it harder for them to be themselves. They want things to change.

Breaking Free is all about helping young people make that change, by giving them the tools to identify and challenge gender stereotypes.

Breaking Free is designed to build mental well-being and grow resilience in Brownies, Guides and members of The Senior Section. Resilience helps girls cope when they’re faced with the pressures of everyday life – whether that’s in their schools, families or friendship groups – so that they can have fun, take new opportunities and have good mental well-being.

The training is free of charge and lunch will be provided, however, you will be asked to pay £5 at the time of booking to secure your place. This will be refunded after the training. However in the case of you not attending on the day and if you fail to notify us by the closing date then the £5 will not be returned.

Unfortunately, we cannot pay travel expenses for this event. However, you may be able to claim back through your unit or county, so ask around!

What are Peer Educators?

This is the basic training towards becoming a fully trained Peer Educator.  This means you will (if you want) be able to go into local Brownie, Guide and Senior Section units to run sessions on issues affecting girls and young women in the UK.

What else can Peer Educators do?

You will also find out about other topics that Peer Educators can deliver including the new Breaking Free topic.   There is to be a training on the Breaking Free topic in June, if you are interested in attending this training click here.

What can I expect at the day?

Although it is called ‘training’, the day is a fun mixture of activities and games  as well as giving you the skills and knowledge needed to run sessions on your own.  You will enjoy getting to know other members of The Senior Section from across the Region and get to know some experienced Peer Educators.
