The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) is a programme of activities open to girls and young women aged 14 to 24.

DofE fits in closely with many of the awards and qualifications available to you through guiding, in particular the Queen’s Guide award.

There are three progressive levels of the award – Bronze, Silver and Gold – that vary in length and commitment.

For each level you need to undertake four sections; volunteering, physical, skills-development and an expedition. For the Gold level you will also need to take part in a residential event.

Latest DofE news from our region DofE team

UPDATE on expeditions – As yet we cannot make definite plans to run expeditions, but we have tentatively pencilled in the following dates:

Training Day (probably in a variety of locations) 11 July – This is primarily for those who are completing the initial training virtually (see details below of virtual trainings) but is open to anyone who feels very rusty from last year.

Practice expeditions – Within the period 23 July (evening) to 27 July – Bronze 2 days, Silver 3 days (maybe 2 ½), Gold 4 days (maybe 3 ½).

Assessed Expeditions – Within the period August 20 (evening) to 24 August – Bronze 2 days, Silver 3 days, Gold 4 days

These cannot be confirmed yet until it is clear what will be possible based on the disease situation, government guidelines, and Girlguiding’s position.  In order to help in planning these could you please let the DofE team know if you are hoping to join us this year for the training day, your practice and/or assessed expeditions so that they have an idea of both numbers and where you live. That will enable us to develop plans which will in due course be advertised on the website for you to sign up for. Please email us as soon as possible on info@girlguidingnortheast.org.uk.

Trainings – We usually run an expedition training weekend in the Spring, which is also not possible, so instead plan to run some virtual training sessions so that less training outside will be needed.  There will also be a virtual 1st Aid course offered, which will also need a practical element which will be done when practical expedition training can take place.

Trainings will be advertised on the website calendar and will cover expedition training at Bronze, Silver and Gold as well as 1st Aid.

If you are a direct entrant to Silver or Gold and have no or very little experience in navigation then you must do the training at all three levels as both Silver and Gold will assume a level of knowledge based on having already completed expeditions at the previous level.

DofE have offered some flexibilities on expeditions and once we know what is possible we can see which of these could be used at region level.

The first of these courses is Bronze Expedition Training and will comprise three sessions on Tuesdays 30 March, 13 and 27 April.

To register, you must already have registered to do your Bronze DofE award and you must be able to attend all three sessions.

There are only 12 places – if when you come to book you find the course is full please email sharron.little@girlguidingnortheast.org.uk so that we know if there is enough demand to run a second course.

This is only open to Girlguiding members based in North East England who are planning to complete their actual expeditions with North East England.

Silver Expedition Training will comprise three sessions on Thursdays, 29 April, 6 and 13 May.

To register, you must already have registered to do your Silver DofE award and you must be able to attend all three sessions.

There are only 12 places – if when you come to book you find the course is full please email sharron.little@girlguidingnortheast.org.uk so that we know if there is enough demand to run a second course.

Gold Expedition Training will comprise three sessions on Tuesdays 1, 8 and 15 June.

To register, you must already have registered to do your Gold DofE award and you must be able to attend all three sessions.

There are only 12 places – if when you come to book you find the course is full please email sharron.little@girlguidingnortheast.org.uk so that we know if there is enough demand to run a second course.

1st Aid Training for all levels of DofE will comprise two virtual sessions on 22 May, one from 1000-1230 and the second from 1300-1530.

The proposed practical training day for 1st Aid is Sunday 11 July and will comprise a day’s training for groups at each level.  This is essential to complete the training element of the preparation.

There will be one further session for each level for those who are booked on either the practice or assessed expeditions to start the planning process.

Leaders – If leaders want to join a training session to see what is taught can they please email Sharron at sharron.little@girlguidingnortheast.org.uk so that they do not take up a participant’s place.

If you have any questions about these plans please email isabel.woodland@girlguidingnortheast.org.uk
