Toni & Liz’s World of Opportunity. World Scout Jamboree 2019

Rangers Toni & Liz from Market Rasen Division attended the 24th World Scout Jamboree 2019 in West Virginia. Hear about all their fun, friendships and experiences here!

It all started with…

Girlguiding North East England World of Opportunities

Girlguiding North East England World of Opportunities selection at Bradley Woods, 14 – 16 of July 2017 when we were 12 years old. We would be part of 100 girl guides to be selected. Only nine went from North East England.

Over the next two years…

We had many practice camps up in Commondale where we joined with the rest of our unit to do team building activities. The unit consisted of 27 Scouts from the Cleveland District, nine Guides from the North East England region and four Leaders.

Our target to fundraise was £3,700. We received many grants from lots of different organisations and worked very hard baking cakes, selling them at school and the Co-op, doing a tombola in Morrisons, ran a quiz night and a race night and held various other events. We also helped run a Division America Day. We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped us on our journey, we learnt a lot from it!

Our Equipment…

Ready to go!

Travelling to Middlesbrough…

We had to meet at Middlesbrough Scout Hut where we would catch the bus at 2:30 am on Saturday 19 July.

Edinburgh to Toronto to New York…

After a very long and tiring journey from Middlesbrough to Edinburgh we boarded our flight at Edinburgh airport which would take us to Toronto airport where we connected to our flight which took us to New York City.

New York

After several delays we arrived in New York City, late and with no bags. We decided to go sightseeing as there wasn’t much else we could do. First stop: Times Square!

A day of sightseeing…

In New York we visited Central Park, then we went on a bus tour looking at some of the greatest sights in the big city. We stopped for lunch at a McDonalds and then visited the 9/11 memorial.

Trip To Fairmont…

We arrived at Fairmont University at about 0:30am and all had very rushed showers before bed. We then travelled the next morning at about 8:00am on a bus towards the Jamboree.

World Scout Jamboree!!

We arrived at the Jamboree on Monday the 22 July, the opening ceremony was on the Tuesday so we had a day to set up our campsite and meet new people.

Tuesday 23 July

We spent the day exploring the summit and meeting lots of new people. We had the best time taking photos in front of the signs and looking inside some of the tents. We played a very competitive game of Pictionary with some Boy Scouts of America.

The site was Massive!!

Opening ceremony

The opening ceremony was so amazing. They listed all the countries that were attending the jamboree and when the United Kingdom came up everyone got up and cheered. At the end there was a fabulous drone production, this was absolutely breath taking and the drones pictured some amazing sights.

Some of the activities we did…

  • Team paddle boarding
  • Single Paddle boarding
  • Scuba diving
  • Climbing
  • Zipline
