County commissioner – West Yorkshire West county
Could this be your next guiding adventure?
This is your opportunity to take a look at your guiding journey and whether now is the right time for you to bring all your management skills to support Girlguiding in WYW as the next county commissioner.
You might be one of a group of volunteers who together, could make a real difference by bringing your skills together as a county commissioner team to support others and manage county business.
This opportunity is open to all Girlguiding leaders, you do not need to have any previous experience as a district or division commissioner. You could have 6 months or 60 years’ experience as a leader, we still want to hear from you if you think you could support Girlguiding in WYW.
What does being ‘county commissioner’ actually mean?
A Girlguiding county commissioner is the lead volunteer for their county, representing it at the regional level and playing a key role in shaping the organisation’s strategy and direction. They also support district and/or division commissioners to ensure high-quality guiding for girls and young women in their area.
Key responsibilities of a county commissioner include:
Shaping the future: Formulating and following a strategic plan for Guiding in the county, including ensuring the long-term sustainability of the organisation within the area.
Leadership: Leading and supporting a team of lead volunteers, including district and/or division commissioners, to ensure a high-quality guiding programme across the county.
Communication and engagement: Building relationships and communicating effectively with various levels of the Girlguiding organisation, local communities, and other stakeholders.
Resource management: Understanding financial matters and helping to manage resources effectively.
Promoting guiding: Promoting opportunities for training, activities, and fundraising to increase the visibility and impact of Girlguiding in the county.
Compliance and safety: Ensuring compliance with Girlguiding policies and procedures, including safer guiding practices and legal requirements, keeping the members of the county safe and supported.
Advocacy and networking: Be a proud ambassador for your county at regional meetings and events, sharing successes and working with local communities to promote Girlguiding.
Delegation: Delegating tasks to other volunteers and ensuring that tasks are completed effectively and on time.
Supporting Units: Helping local commissioners and units to deliver a high-quality, girl-led program of activities and events in an inclusive space where girls and leaders feel confident.
Providing training and mentoring: Providing training and mentoring support to district and/or division commissioners, county lead volunteers and local leaders.
Chairing committees: Charing the county executive committee and potentially other committees and groups that drive decision making in your county.
Managing finances and budgets: Understanding the basics of financial management and working with a treasurer to manage the county’s finances. Ensuring transparency and accountability.
There is not an expectation that the county commissioner manages the county single-handed. It’s very much a management role, leading by example, creating a team, working together to get things done.
